In the EU, Regulation (EC) 183/2005 sets hygiene requirements for feed, from primary production to feeding animals intended for food production. The aim is to ensure a high level of protection for animal and consumer health through feed control throughout the food chain. Feed operators are directly responsible for feed safety by implementing risk-based procedures and critical control point control (HACCP), applying good hygiene practices, and using feed exclusively from establishments registered/recognized under this regulation.

ESI’s international technical team provides consultancy services for Animal & Pet Food, closely monitoring regulatory developments in the EU and North America and supporting companies with training, document development, and 1st and 2nd party audits.

In the USA, as part of the FSMA, the FDA has published new regulations on GMPs and Preventive Controls for Animal Feed and Pets. A mandatory training on new GMPs, new Preventive Controls, and drafting the Food Safety Plan is required for the domestic or foreign processor.
